Views of Chenini, a Berber village in Tunisia

Chenini - cliff.jpg

Welcome to Chenini, Southern Tunisia. It is a historic Berber village, located near Tataouine (and yes, the place Tattoine in Star Wars is named after, which is why this looks so fimilar as a mix of the place C-3po and R2-D2 ogot lost and just general 'western' films) In real life it's in in the Dahar Mountains.

The historic part is builts into the hiillside, the more you look at it the more you see houses and shops and whanot buried in the hills. The modern part shown below is more 'standard' and is more built on the hill rather than into it.

But back to the historic part. The village was established around the 12th century as a ksar—a fortified granary used by nomadic tribes to protect their food and goods. Its stone structures, carved into the mountainside, blend seamlessly with the arid landscape, creating a striking visual of earth-toned dwellings and ancient architecture.

Chenini was strategically positioned for defense, and its granaries served not only economic but also social and cultural roles in Berber life. Though much of the population has relocated to the modern settlement on the facing hill as well as over the back of this hill, some residents still inhabit the old village, preserving traditional ways of life. One of these families were nice enough to although us to look inside their home and it was basic but beuaotful.

We were here as we moved between tourist attractions, mostly berber, generally related to Star Wars in some way (this village isn't a filming site like so many other places are) But it was one of the more interesting places we went, it was a fairly long walk from the bottom of the hill to the top as we were guided by a Local, he explained the history and the berber way of life. Well worth a visit
