Friday is a fun day.

Especially if one looks forward to the weekend. So, let's have fun with squirrels today.

According to this one, it was hidden behind the new plant.

The squirrels know that I chase them off the flowerpots, as they destroy the roots of the flowers by planting their nuts deep into the pots. Another problem is that a few squirrels plant their nuts in the same pots, so, you can imagine what happens to a plant when everyone comes to collect their nuts. An early Christmas, when one discovers more nuts in a pot that other squirrels have planted. Real bedlam if one sees another one digging in a pot, and the poor flower ends up in the middle of the battle.

I don't think that the governor of the Cape, a Mr Cecil John Rhodes, knew what things would look like now when he imported the squirrels during the 1800s from the UK. Apparently, he wanted a reminder of his homeland and to see the squirrels in the imported Oak trees in his garden. Not realising that nature would proliferate his efforts in sheer abundance. Turns out that now we have them all over.

And, so, he decided that things were safe, and he started to mine for nuts.

Squirrels are loved by some, and hated by others, as they regard them as garden and crop pests. They have also to be careful of predators, such as big raptor birds, dogs, cars, and every time that we see a squirrel in a roadkill, that makes us feel so bad.

This little one gave me a death stare, as I made a loud noise, but it saw that I was looking through the study window and that I couldn't get to it.
So, what do you think it did?

Well, it used the pot as a toilet, just to show me that it was not scared of me. Lol. And then it left.

If you think that was funny, then let's have a look in nature.

That little one found a nice Sealy-Posture Pedic mattress to rest upon.

In the meantime, it was keeping an eye on me to see what I was up to.

As I walked a bit closer, it turned to give me an eye.

And then it said, Hey, can't you see that I am resting here? GO AWAY!

So that's it, just my way to have fun with these cute little ones and let me tell you that they are very active running around all over the place. Now and then, they will take a short rest like the one above, and soon it will scatter up and down that tree at high speed. They are amazing athletes, and it is wonderful to see how agile they are, jumping from branch to branch, and even tree to tree. I have not yet again caught one midair jumping from one tree to another tree, but I have posted one previously in my blog.

I hope everyone will have a good Friday and a great weekend.

I have always adored squirrels because of the movies I watched. But after reading your blog, it gave me another perspective about them. They are cute but should be controlled. It is also funny how that squirrel teased you by turning your pot as toilet.😁❤️

The squirrel population here is controlled by the many predators that kill and eat them. Eagles, hawks, jackals, snakes, dogs, and even cars regularly thin them out. Yep! That squirrel just had to show me that he is the boss in the garden.

But this squirrel is almost a member of the family, from what I see, hahaha...
How beautiful!
It doesn't seem to be afraid of you.

Thank you, and the squirrel is only brave until I go out there, as then he scatters.

Now there is something we have in common. They seem to be identical and we have them scrambling around all over the place. I tried to grow corn in the garden once and they snacked them to death just like they did the big sunflowers. I have one that lives in the shed all winter and drives the dog crazy.

Damn cute little tree rats though!

Great, and they have to be almost identical as they were imported from North America. Lol... their snacking habits can drive one crazy, as here the macadamia nuts, and granadillas don't last long.
You are going to have to take your mutt to an animal psychiatrist 😜

Close up squirrels! That got a 100% vote, obviously :-D

I didn't know that squirrels were imported, I thought they were all over the world, anyway, in different shapes and varieties. I have to read up on squirrels it seems...

They are all over the world, but it all started in North America methinks.

That sounds like the beginning of a zombie movie :-D
