Work Life - Voluntary tasks in the hotel industry: what is the most convenient time to make the most of the trip? / Tareas voluntarias en hotelería: ¿cuál es el horario más conveniente para aprovechar bien el viaje? 😃❤️

In all this time exchanging work for accommodation in different hostels in Argentina, I had several schedules that allowed me to define which one I liked the most. My experiences were of all kinds, although in general they were good and I can't complain because I was able to get to know the places I was visiting well. Within the shifts I had to work, I had to do all kinds of tasks, so I felt that the experience was quite dynamic. Of course, everything was justified by my main objective, which was to be able to make a low-cost trip 😃.

En todo este tiempo haciendo intercambios de trabajo por alojamiento en distintos hosteles de Argentina, tuve varios esquemas de horarios que me permitieron definir cuál era el que más me gustaba. Mis experiencias fueron de todo tipo, aunque en líneas generales fueron buenas y no me puedo quejar porque pude conocer bien los lugares en los que estaba de visita. Dentro de los turnos en los que me tocó trabajar tuve que hacer tareas de todo tipo, por lo que sentí que la experiencia fue bastante dinámica. Por supuesto, todo se justificaba con mi objetivo principal que era poder hacer un viaje a bajo costo 😃.

One of the most hotly debated issues in the world of hospitality volunteering revolves around the workload. As this work is unpaid, it is assumed that the workload has to be low and the tasks do not have to be heavy. In return, the volunteer traveller receives accommodation and at least some of the day's meals. In my opinion, the ideal is at least accommodation and breakfast in exchange for 20 hours of work per week. It would be great to say that everyone does this, but I have volunteered up to 30 hours a week in exchange for just a place to sleep (I didn't know at the time that the hours had to be much less and that I had to be fed, but I was very excited to travel without spending money on accommodation).

Una de las cuestiones más discutidas en el mundo de los voluntariados en hotelería ronda en torno a la carga horaria. Como este trabajo no es remunerado, se supone que la carga horaria tiene que ser baja y las tareas no tienen que ser pesadas. A cambio, el viajero voluntario recibe alojamiento y al menos alguna de las comidas del día. En mi opinión, lo ideal es como mínimo hospedaje y desayuno a cambio de 20 horas semanales de trabajo. Sería genial decir que todo el mundo cumple esto, pero he llegado a hacer trabajo voluntario de hasta 30 horas semanales a cambio de solo un lugar para dormir (en ese entonces no sabía que las horas debían ser mucho menos y que me tenían que dar de comer, pero estaba muy emocionada por viajar sin gastar dinero en alojamiento).

In addition to the workload, another debatable issue is the timetable in which the tasks have to be fulfilled. Ideally, volunteering should be done in the morning or in the evening, so that you have most of the day free to go sightseeing. Again, I would like to say that all hostels respect this, but they do not. I have had to keep a central timetable from 1pm to 5pm, and even a cut-off timetable of two hours in the morning and two in the evening, where I couldn't make any plans that long or far because I had to go back to work (I didn't hesitate to leave that place).

Además de la carga horaria, otra cuestión discutible es el horario en el que hay que cumplir las tareas. Idealmente, los voluntariados deberían realizarse por la mañana o por la noche, de modo que te quede la mayor parte del día libre como para ir a recorrer el lugar. Nuevamente, me gustaría decir que todos los hospedajes respetan esto, pero no es así. Me ha tocado cumplir un horario central de 13 a 17, y hasta horario cortado de dos horas en la mañana y dos en la noche, en donde no podía hacer ningún plan tan largo ni lejos porque debía regresar a trabajar (no dudé mucho en irme de ese lugar).

But I also had good experiences working in the morning shift and the night shift, as I liked it. From there, another dilemma arises: the tasks to be done in each shift. All the hotel experience I gained in this more than a year and a half doing this allows me to say that the shift with the most work is in the morning, when all the cleaning tasks of the place are done. In the morning all the guests are having breakfast and there are a lot of people around, so it is usually a heavy shift. However, finishing work before noon leaves you with the rest of the day free to wander around without worrying about the clock.

Pero también tuve experiencias buenas trabajando en el turno mañana y en el turno noche, como me gustaba. A partir de ahí, surge otro dilema: las tareas que hay que hacer en cada turno. Toda la experiencia de hotelería que adquirí en este más de año y medio haciendo esto me permite decir que el turno con más trabajo es a la mañana, cuando se hacen todas las tareas de limpieza del lugar. Por la mañana están todos los huéspedes desayunando y hay mucha gente rondando, por lo que suele ser un turno pesado. Sin embargo, terminar el trabajo antes del mediodía te deja todo el resto del día libre para ir a pasear sin preocuparte por el reloj.

But my favourite of all is the night shift as a receptionist. This was the shift that worked best for me because I was able to learn a lot of conversational English while greeting guests, plus I didn't have to work as hard as the cleaning shift. Also, being a night shift after 8PM, you have most of the day off so you can get up early and go enjoy the mountains before you have to do your hotel shift. This was the reason why I lasted almost six months in my last volunteering in Ushuaia: because I was as a receptionist at night, in a very quiet shift where I could also write my Hive content and because I had the whole day free to enjoy the sun.

Pero mi favorito de todos es el turno de la noche como recepcionista. Este fue el turno que más me sirvió porque pude aprender bastante conversación de inglés mientras recibía a los huéspedes, además de no tener que hacer tanto esfuerzo como en el turno de la limpieza. También, al ser un turno en la noche después de las 8PM, tenés casi todo el día libre como para levantarte temprano e ir a disfrutar de la montaña antes de tener que cumplir con tu turno de hotelería. Esta fue la razón por la que duré casi seis meses en mi último voluntariado en Ushuaia: porque estaba como recepcionista en la noche, en un turno muy tranquilo donde también podía escribir mi contenido de Hive y porque me quedaba todo el día libre para aprovechar del sol.

I think that in my case, I was able to take advantage of the work-for-housing opportunities to be able to travel around my country at low cost. There were some experiences that I liked more than others, but all of them were good and allowed me to achieve my goal. Of all the schedules I had to work, I always preferred the night shift, and if there was a chance to opt for it, I did not hesitate to accept. I think this is a good way to travel while saving a bit of money and, at the same time, you get to take some hotel knowledge with you 😃.

Creo que en mi caso, supe aprovechar bien las oportunidades de trabajo por alojamiento para poder recorrer mi país a bajo costo. Hubieron algunas experiencias que me gustaron más que otras, pero todas fueron buenas y me permitieron cumplir mi objetivo. De todos los horarios en los que me tocó trabajar, siempre preferí el turno noche, y si había una posibilidad de optar por él, no dudaba en aceptar. Pienso que esta es una buena manera de viajar ahorrando un poco de dinero y de paso, te llevas con vos unos cuantos conocimientos de hotelería 😃.
