In March 2018 we had just bought an old Land Rover and drove it over the mountains to a Land Rover event, starting an obsession with these old cars that would go on to this very day. We'd restore that old girl and ship her to the UK, and drive her to Morocco and Portugal, but that's another story. Actually, it's a story I've already written about on the blockchain, like I do with all my cool journeys.
In March 2018 I also joined this blockchain in it's former version of Steem, which was a much cooler name but arguably not as good as what we have here now with Hive.
Since then, I've written 2323 posts, which is an average of .8 a day. My longest break has been 18 days. I don't know why I was off chain for that long in July of 2021. Back then we bought a little dinghy, another little Land Rover, did a few mini trips, and swore at Dan Andrews, the premier of Victoria, who kept putting us in lockdowns. I also was about to quit work, and was super stressed. Maybe Hive was too much for me on top of everything else. We sold the boat because wind freaks me out.
I've uploaded over 2000 images.
How do I know all of this? My good be-bearded friend @hol0zr, also Australian, so he must be cool as well, did a cool thang - the Hive Report Card. You can find out a lot about where you've been from this little tool.
I don't pretend to understand half of what any of this data means, but some of it is interesting. I'm suprised I have more engagement on higher word count posts - I thought the opposite was true and people gave up after 200 words. Perhaps it's just the people I connect to here, or perhaps the content I write. Entering challenges often gets more engagement as it's encouraged within communities, which the advent of, by the way, has been great for engagement on Hive, despite what they say. And I do like using @commentrewarder - though it feels a bit icky to reward people in this way for engaging with you, we're all time poor and sometimes knowing you'll get an upvote is enough impetus to read someone's work. But I digress.
I also don't pretend to understand what makes any of my posts readable. Apparently it uses the Flesch-Kincaid method, which designates a score to assess how difficult a passage of text via analyzing sentence length and word complexity. Kudos to those reading my 'difficult to understand' posts. That data was a bit mysterious to me. I do adjust my sentences according to who I believe my audience might be or who I'm connecting to, or the subject matter, so it didn't feel important to me. I did find it interesting that I'm often writing at middle to high school level. I think I adjust my writing a lot because this is a social media where you want to connect to as many people as possible, not just the few that can understand big words and complex sentences. Furthermore, these days I don't pour over every word and sentence to correct before I publish like I did in the early days. I'm here to connect, not to be perfect.
It also has so little relevance anyway, as posts designed to be simple to read, such as this one just before my father died, and rated at a Grade 2/Elementary school readability, doesn't really correctly assess the post. The sentences were constructed in such a way to be almost childlike as the author - me - faces loses a parent. The simple sentences are designed in such a way because there is no room for complexity as one struggles with such an extreme emotional task. Simplicity was meant to keep the telling raw and intimate. In short, I have an issue with the Flesch-Kincaid score as it tells you how mechanically easy it is to read, not how intellectually or emotionally challenging it might be. It assumes long words are hard, short words are easy. It measures form, not depth. Not that I'm Hemingway or McCarthy, but they would have also likely got elementary scores according to this test. It's not a data read I would take seriously or look at for very long and means very little to me.
I was a little shocked that I've written less posts this year than when I started, but since I've got 7 posts to make up for 2020, I'm sure I'll be fine. I would hate to say it's a little bit competititive of me but I like to think I could manaage a 365 post a year average, though I haven't nailed that yet. You only get one shot a year you see.
I keep thinking about that long absence in July 2021. I was really struggling and about to quit a job of 13 years. It felt like I was going to have a breakdown like I had in 2016 or so. Last week I had five days without posting and it reminded me of that. I wasn't engaging well in real life, let alone able to focus on Hive. The data doesn't tell you such things, does it now?
Perhaps you need to be a data person to understand all of this better and to get more out of it. @tarazkp did a great write up of his analysis of his own report card this week and I highly recommend you read it.
Me, I'm bored already - data bores the bejesus out of me.
I mean, I was interested for a minute, but it's not why I'm voting for @hol0zr as witness. I'm voting for him because he's an honest, passionate, caring guy - and he bloody loves this blockchain. He's creative, funny, and is always there to redirect me when I'm having an unnecessary emotional outburst or a rant over something not worth going into a rabbit hole over. He's an ideas man and is in love with the arts from photographer to literature, particularly science fiction, and sends me cool stuff in Discord to feel awe over. He also writes great stories and is willing to read mine. But don't tell him all of this. It'll go to his head.
POSTSCIPT - I had absolutely no idea where to post this post, so went for my default Rant/Complain/Talk - any ideas where it could have been more appropriately posted?
With Love,

NICE! Thanks for sharing this cool tool. Amazing what results come up. I'm mostly surprised at my writing level: mostly college level, with plenty of university, post-grad, and professional. I never would have thought so, as I'd see myself more on the high-school level. But then I am reminded of what a friend of mine once told me: Apparently I talk like a book! So yeah, I guess that is reflected in my writing.
As for the frequency of posting, I can really see the tendency spiraling downwards. And it's true, lately I have been wondering what to post about, unable to come up with interesting stuff. Whereas I remember how I used to have tons of inspirations every day, way more than I could possibly turn into posts.

I love statistics. I'm more active in the comments on Hive. You write a lot; you and tarazkp are probably the two people I follow who write frequently and well.
I'm flattered - thanks so much. I have really been appreciating your comments!
Strangely enough, I did read all of your post! Just skirting around and seen the username and the unmistakeable Aussie Bushland with the Land Rover. I dont often get much time to catch up on posts so it's nice to run into some.
A fair effort on the posting front. I think I've done like 5-6 this year. lol
I think it's a good cover photo click bait! She's pretty photogenic that one.
Love this!
It’s wild how the data only tells part of the story. The real stuff is in the emotions, the struggles and the memories behind each post. Which makes me totally agree that Hive is more about connection than analytics. I will go check my data too anyway
I trust your judgment so I’ll be voting too :)
“C/Loving”Hive I guess.
I think you and me are alike in this regard!
He writes well too.. if you don't know already, he's worth a follow. A bit of data stuff, gaming, a bit of real life, a few book reviews and some solid fiction.
I’ve read one of his fictions. It was good. I will give him a follow.
Absolutely data never tells all of the story - but it tells us the truth. That's why I am such a data nerd. My old job, I did insights, analytics, and all that sort of stuff, but I've always had a soft spot for text analytics which I never really got to do a whole lot of.
You have my vote. I have approved witnesses. Good luck with the data project. Love to see it:)
Kinda neat how you can pull all that from the report card. I read tarazkp's post too and he did a great job breaking it down. However, I know I suck at writing and posting so no need to even look. :-)
You do a great job and are one of the writers I look forward to reading when I get online. I enjoy reading about your exploits and experiences. They are so relatable.
You don't suck at all. I totally love your posts. You are so genuine. Don't underrate yourself!
oh, I know. Just being a little self depricating. However, I could write better if I tried and I should. However, I just feel like I should write like I talk. Its like you said, it seems more me.
Write as you speak. That's what we should all do, bring our whole selves to the platform.
People are unique. People make content. Unique People and Unique content are what makes this place so very special.
Yes, that is what feels most natural to me is writing as I speak. It is special and I wish it would grow more than it has.
I will try the tool.
You'll love it
I did and voted for his witness :)
He's a good man!
Yes, like one of us, I have had few conversations with him.
I am reading this, and I appreciate the public praise. :)
I saw your vote come through! Thank you so very much!
I ran mine and "I'm suprised I have more engagement on higher word count posts" is also true! I was also curious about this: "I did find it interesting that I'm often writing at middle to high school level." as apparently I am also. My longest miss was 73 days when my husband died.
But the coolest thing for me was finding all the lost posts! I didn't start saving them until 2019 on my computer. Now I have a winter project: restoring the missing ones to my files.
Thanks so much to both of you, one for creating it and the other for posting about it!
That's a damn good reason not to post my love.
That's amazing... I'm so glad!
What format do you want your posts to be in when you get them on your computer? I wrote a python script so I could get mine out of the chain (for similar reasons, so I have a local copy) and I converted them to markdown files (which is the formatting format used on hive)
I could look at doing a bulk downloader so you get individual files instead of a json or a csv if that would be a helpful feature?
Otherwise, I can run it on your account and send you the files on discord if you hang out there, it won't take me very long to run the script.
Well, you first must understand you are talking to ancient Neanderthal. I'm still running Windows 7 until it no longer works at all. (I did the same with Windows XP Pro.) And because I went to 7 from XP, I'm still using the.doc format. So I write the post in Microsoft Word and put in my photos as .jpgs. I think save the doc to a dated and named file for that day and the photos are also saved in that file separately.
It's mostly the files from 2018 and maybe some in 2019 before I started saving them.
I was on discord, probably still have an account, but found it not user friendly for this old Neanderthal. Not sure I could navigate it well enough to find them...
I think what you did is wonderful! And if I knew how to vote for a witness (totally over my head) I'd vote for you, just because @riverflows said to. :))
Thank you for all your work and help!

As to getting things into that format - That is the same format I use, but I use a program called Obsidian to organise my posts while I am writing, its a bit different to word, but it is still words :)
The issue with older posts is that not all of the images are "Still around" on the Internet (particularly if you used Steem back in the day).
I will get you an extract of your posts in plain text as separate files (it will be missing the paragraphs, though!) with the date then the title, so they will look like:
DATE_Title.txt, so you can open them in wordpad or notepad, or indeed, MS word - it should save you a lot of time and let you spend your winter doing other things :)
Well, voting was easy! I can manage that!
I've done 5 or 6 posts so far, the only thing is the photos aren't labelled as I had them. But with the post as guide, I can get them set up correctly in word. Maybe some day I will relabel the photos as it helps when I search for them.
I will try what you set up and see if it is faster. Thank you!
Thank you for the vote, I saw that come through shortly before you wrote the reply here! Each time my node signs a block, I get a small amount of Hive Power, but for me, its the joy of having a computer in my house that helps secure the hive blockchain. :) (I am a bit of a technical nerd, but not as much as some people round these parts!)
It is nearing bed time here - so I've written myself a note to get your posts as a text file, I'll zip them up, and I'll upload them somewhere you can download so you've got them all ready to put into word, or whatever system you want to use.
We all have different systems to manage our writing (for those of us that do!) and I find myself writing and organising my posts many days in advance. Since my retrenchment at my job, I've been a prolific writer.
That's indeed an interesting tool that holoz0r made! I saw it a few days ago and did a checkout of my last 100 posts, and for some reason, got curious about the same thing like you, the "Readability Distribution"... 😃
As English isn't my first language (rather like 3rd... lol), I didn't expect to see my score "too high", but after reading your post and a bit of thinking, it makes no sense to chase "University' degree readers... The point of social media isn't to write a "Hemingway type" content, but rather content readable to the masses... We want to reach more than just 3-5% of the population!
Btw, it's not all about education, but also about "readability" for people like me, who are not native English speakers... If someone writes a "complicated" post, most non-English speakers will not understand it, but that doesn't mean they aren't educated or your target audience...
Anyways, nice tool, and great reflection on your HIVE data... Maybe I will follow your example and do the same for my account... ;)
I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project! Check out our Reading Suggestions Posts!
Please consider voting for our Liotes HIVE Witness. Thank you!
Do it, if only for the word count mountain! I'm nearly at one million words published just in my posts. Its probably way more in comments.
Hehehehe....
It does look cool... 😀
You're a word-yon-aire!
You always spell my name wrong :P Thank you so much for your kind words. Your writing is easy to understand, but I am highly educated, and well, I think we're sort of kindred spirits, apart from the fact you can't fucking spell my name correctly!
Thank you. I have been working on some stuff with comments from author to author, but it is very inefficient. You were close at the top of my list, and I've written about 20,000 words of comments at you.
Crazy. Considering we only really started commenting on each other's ramblings only a few months ago.
I just don't get how we knew about each other but didn't really pay much attention all of these years and then BOOM! To think if we had connected years ago I might have learnt to spell your name by now. I try. Honestly. Fucking clever people putting 0 in their names.
I do also own the account @holozor , but I haven't used it, I registered it in case people put a "o" instead of a zero.
I am prepared for such eventualities, but not your butchering
Congratulations @riverflows! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)
