Wait until people hear about what they talk about on reddit, or in schools, or gasp, the pub!
So this morning we were engaged in a really interesting conversation about space, and how it's impossible to travel those distances to galaxies that are moving away from us so that we'll never catch up even if we tried.
Then, someone came in and started talking football, which went for half an hour, and was fucking boring. How I wish I could have scrolled past/muted them. What I didn't do was scream at them for how boring they were. Well, on the inside...
Great relationships, good conversations, and artwork on the walls of my house that wouldn't be there if I hadn't met the people through HIVE.
I agree - though I don't have an artwork. But yes. The criticism I read also was bitter about people who raved about the social connection on Hive as if we were just coming up with a line. I think perhaps he's just failed to make it himself - both IRL and here.
Future anthropologists might marvel at hive, or be completely enthralled by disgust. We won't know until later.
Ha, I'm reminded of Asterix burying some odd things and musing that future archaeologists would be puzzling over that one. The odd thing is that if there is a civilisation ending event, I imagine the digital world will end too, and there will be little to 'dig' up.
I feel like the comment "we can only hope" is relevant to all of the points made in your reply. :D
But I want to focus on:
Did you know that all motion is impossible? At least, according to Zeno's Paradox. In order to travel from Point A to Point B, you must first arrive at the half way point.
He posits that there are an infinite number of halfway points, therefore, you can never actually get from A to B.
Now, we know this to be nonsense, but perhaps we might look at far away galaxies as an opportunity in the future. Sure, we can't travel faster than light, but to quote Farsnworth from Futurama...
"That's why scientists raised the speed of light!"
Ah, interesting - Modern physics vs old Greek philosophical paradoxes! Motion isn't a series of infinite steps, as Zeno postulated, but an ongoing process where speed, distance and time are in relationship. Mate, it's Friday afternoon - don't get me into philosophy and physics at this hour! Any Youtube on said subjects is actually banned at my house after 5 pm, though Jamie gets away with it if I'm cooking dinner, and I accidentally pick things up by osmosis.
Can't all space travel issues be solved with wormholes and warp drives? :P
Philosophy and physics are the best topics! So much overlap for the inquisitive mind.
Surprised those topics don't come out when the beers (or whatever other alcoholic substance are enjoyed) are cracked open.
I despair about younger gen who aren't brought up with academics, only fkn sport and dumbed down curriculum. If you don't have a decent education how can you articulate the right questions.
I'm not religious one bit, but amen (possibly because its a Sunday...)
The main thing taught to me at university, without it being formally taught, was to come to my own conclusions based on evidence.
It doesn't matter what the field is, it is relevant. The sad thing is, we don't need academics to teach it, merely to explain the evidence based on their observations.
Where the observations differ, further investigation and observations are required.
It isn't quite the scientific method in formality, but as someone not educated in sociology, or even the way in which academics interrogate each other (and their ideas) - it makes sense to me.
