Good news my friends - the house is SOLD! How things can just turn on a pin. Last week I was in an anxiety spiral wondering how we were going to pay this stupid mortgage and afford to eat and now we have 30 days to settle.
Basically on Friday, as I was driving up with my nephew and bro in law to meet the rest of the family for a weekend away, Jamie rang to say we had an offer on the house.
It was reasonable, we supposed, but we did want her to up it at least 20 k so we could almost break even. We were prepared to take a cut because we needed to just get on with life, but were kinda disappointed as the offer was under the bottom of our range.
Then, would you believe it, a guy that low balled us three months ago rang our agent and upped his offer to the low end of our range. Why he waited so long is beyond me. He was annoyed at our agent for apparently not getting back to him weeks ago, but she had, over and over, with a call log to prove it. Anyway he said no conditions - he had already had paid for a building report - and 60 day settlement.
This caused our original woman to up her offer and remove her conditions...that is, we wouldn't need the drama of getting a building report where we had no idea whether a builder would be picky or not and whether she'd use any flaws to lower the price.
He counters, she countered, and in the end he just hadn't got back to the agent by the end of Sunday and we thought the offer from her was good enough, and we thought he was a twat. I mean had he got back with more money we may have considered it but we got 20 k over what we were happy with amd toward the higher end of our range.
I can't believe we will be out of the old house and fully into the new by December. There's still a lot to do - I mean I don't even have a plumbed in kitchen yet - but it's not as if I haven't camped out before in a house, making do!
Thanks to everyone on Hive with their wise and encouraging words as I had my anxious meltdowns. It's the end of an era and I'll miss the garden, but ultimately this downsize to the coast is a good decision for us and I'm looking forward to creating a beautiful space to enjoy the next twenty years, should life permit.

The perfect "Christmas tree" for you (if you can find one) would be a potted Rosemary bush! I found one a few years ago at The Home Depot, which I think is similar to your Bunnings store. It was in a flower pot, was maybe 15β20 cm tall, and I had fun crafting miniature ornaments for it from old earrings, beads, construction paper & markers, and so forth. It makes the house smell nice, you can use the rosemary in cooking (or home medicines), and then plant it in your new garden after the holidays! π
That's a lovely idea! We usually bung a couple of eucalyptus branches in a vase...
Awwwww, I'm so pleased to read this! We had kind of a similar thing happen to us a couple of years ago... literally nothing for 3 months and then two offers the same weekend with a similar back and forth to yours. Such a huge relief, I'm so glad!

I love the sound of the process where you can complete so soon. I just hate it here where it takes three months, if we're lucky to shove paper work around and people can pull out anytime until a contract is signed. Freaking madness.

Oh yeah my English mother in law and an English friend both said fingers crossed. We were like ... That's a bit negative! And then realized we don't have same system. Your offer isn't honoured unless you sign the contract and give a deposit!!

So happy for you! I had totally missed this post, just saw the other one about artichokes and was like "huh, when did this happen" π€£ That's really amazing! Must be a big relief π
Oh man SUCH a relief! Now the rest of my life can continue. I was thinking about you coz of the artichokes. My soil was so good there and I don't think I'll have as much luck here! I'll start adding lots of compost and seaweed and cross my fingers.
I just put some more amarillis in the ground at the bakery today. I had dug out the bulbs anyway, so I thought "why not". Took me 5min :-D We'll see how they do. But I'll also try to get some artichoke roots from Lily's school. We still have plenty of space in the garden :-)
Is sea weed very salty as it grows in the sea? or doesn't that matter for soil?
