Rabbit eating red clover in the wet grass in the pasture garden area
On Tuesday I woke at 6:15AM and was very brainfogged. I managed to get my post up with a lot of help from a rampaging cat. Here he’s pretending to be newspapers for the wood stove. I got the stink eye in the last photo.
But I wasn’t even dressed when my helper friend arrived at 9:30AM. It took 5 attempts to finally collect all my clothes and get dressed.
While I was wandering around like a lost soul, he was working his way down the list I had managed to make for him.
I think I made something like 28 qts of sauerkraut last fall to last the year. It’s been in the fridge at 41°F since then. I thought I’d used about half of it, but it was really just over ⅓. Then last week when the power cut off, the fridge sat unopened for 4 hours. That’s not a long time and I didn’t think anything of it.
But all the jars suddenly turned brown. They didn’t smell off or taste funny, but I did have an upset stomach. So one of my helper friend’s jobs was to dump out the remaining jars. They filled a 5 gallon bucket.
I looked up how long you can store sauerkraut at 41°F and it said 4 – 6 months. I got 8 months, so we must have done something right. But now I know I can’t store sauerkraut for a year. Sigh…
Once that was done, he made me an asparagus quiche. It was sooo good! He’s a very good cook, far better than I am.
I did manage to get the laundry started and the kitchen cleaned up, as my brother helped me do the kitchen before he left for the day.
Once my helper left I was on the couch, exhausted. It’s been quite a while since the brainfog was that bad. It had rained off and on all day and was cold which didn’t help.
On Wednesday it’s to be sunny and in the 70’sF and I need to get the basil, peppers, and paprikas planted and mulched. That will finish the Big garden.
Then I hope to get the garlic weeded and maybe some of the Small garden, we’ll see.
Damn, that sucks. All that work down the drain. I'm paranoid about my ferments now, maybe invest in a backup thermometer (just a suggestion) Could've been sitting right at the danger zone temp I think
#hive #posh
We should all give ourselves a daily challenge so we can do it right.
Maybe you were very tired and that gave some brain fog... Too bad for the jar, but yeah they probably went away without working fridge
Too bad you had to toss so much sauerkraut, but now we both know not to make too much at one time. I hope your brain fog leaves quickly as that must really make your day rough.
Do cats really pretend😅
I’ve heard about that before but didn’t believe
That’s a lot to talk about for a day
A day with challenges but still went well
Brain fog is the pits! I had a lot of it before I was finally diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease. Now I'm on medication and it's better.
Several years ago, my husband was very enthusiastic about making sauerkraut. We bought a big crock, and a tamping tool, and made a huge batch. We canned it, and it was very good kraut. Seems to me we did that for two years. Then he admitted he really isn't that fond of sauerkraut; he just wanted to do it for nostalgia's sake, as his parents used to make sauerkraut when he was a kid. I haven't made any since then.
I don't can it because I make it for the probiotics. Canning kills them. So I'll just make enough for 6 - 8 months and hope for the best.
It was several years ago when we canned the sauerkraut, and neither of us knew at the time that it would kill the probiotics. I have learned about that since then. It was still tasty, though!
What a day, full of challenges and accomplishments despite everything 😅
