West of Steps - mum crop Oct 2025.jpg

West of Steps mum finally showing color

On Monday I got my post up, the complaint to the Attorney General filled out and sent, and started cleaning the kitchen when the van arrived to take me to my first appointment.

I was home late morning, made some lunch and sat down to finish ‘All the President’s Men’ and crashed and burned. I spent the afternoon on the couch wrapped in quilts, unable to get warm, even though it was pushing into the 80’sF.

Garlic arrived crop Oct 2025.jpg

I got up when the contractor arrived at 3PM and discovered the garlic was here. I decided it will be planted by the driveway in the Big garden as that’s cleaned out and it’s been a while since it was there.

Front porch - repairing the rotten parts1 crop Oct 2025.jpg

He got started cutting out the rotten end of the 2” x 4” and making a new piece. He also replaced the plywood that had rotted. Then he painted it well with a rot stop mixture he’d made and thoroughly caulked it all.

He likes to sign in a hidden place some of the work he does here, so we did.

He was, of course, thoroughly inspected. I had stayed inside out of the sun as I was having trouble controlling body temperature.

Sun in trees crop Oct 2025.jpg

Once the sun was off the porch, I went outside. The sun coming through the trees gave them color they haven’t been showing. The drought has dulled the foliage everywhere.

Front porch - some boards on crop Oct 2025.jpg

He got the 2 top boards on and the plywood for the post. Everything is thoroughly caulked this time. He plans to reuse the pine boards that still had good areas for the post and side front.

He finished as it got dark and will be back on Tuesday mid-afternoon.

On Tuesday I’m not sure what I am doing. I had hoped to pick lima beans before it rains Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. But I am going with my brothers to install my father’s headstone in the afternoon so won’t have time to process them. My helper friend is coming mid morning and I have several things for him to do. I might just process more Walla onions, maybe for Tom’s family. I also have to finish filing the complaints about Sunrun.

Nice to have the porch fixed and garlic to plant. I really like the color of the mum by the porch and how seriously Larry is supervising. ♥

That's good garlic arrived, and your contractor did really a lot of work that day

It looks like the porch is really coming together. Sounds like you had a busy but productive day. The mums starting to show color must be such a nice sight!

Sounds like you are watching Robert Redford movies. I recently searched for Redford films that are streaming and couldn't find many. btw I have bought bare root trees from Scott Farm Orchards 🙂 gorgeous place. I quickly went back through your posts but didn't find the Sunrun story. Have you shared it?

It was on October 2nd:

I don't have streaming, I get DVDs. Some I have and some I get from the library.

Scott Farm is a lovely place and I was sad to not be going there.

I really enjoyed reading this! It’s nice how you balance home projects, gardening, and personal life all together. The mix of hard work and emotional reflection makes it so relatable, especially with the changing seasons adding their own touch.
