¿Quién soy?/Who I am?

Mi nombre es Sonia Jiménez Socarrás. Soy graduada de Ingeniería Informática y vivo en Camagüey, Cuba. Pertenezco a la AHS, organización que reúne a jóvenes con aptitudes artísticas. Desde pequeña, escribo cuentos y novelas de ciencia ficción y fantasía, por lo que decidí, en coordinación con el Instituto del Libro y la Literatura de mi provincia y el Proyecto literario "Última Hoja", crear una peña en la que se hablara de estos géneros. Arcanopunk lleva en marcha desde mayo del 2024 y tiene lugar en la Librería Ateneo Vietnam en la calle República, los últimos sábados de cada mes a las 10 am. Tengo otra peña, llamada Sol Naciente, en coordinación con la AHS, en la que escritores y músicos vamos a escuelas, primarias, secundarias o preuniversitarios para darnos a conocer. Además, leo mis textos de vez en cuando en el Café Literario Tengo.

Un amigo me incitó a que explorara otras aristas, además de la escritura, ya que vivo sola y todo el peso de la casa recae sobre mí, y necesito abandonar mi trabajo porque es mucha la tensión a la que estoy sometida. No me gusta la forma en que se comportan mis compañeros de trabajo, me mandan a hacer algo y luego se retractan, para poder decir que soy yo quien hace todo mal. Además, se burlan de mí. Como resultado sufro de fuertes dolores de cabeza, que me atacan por estar sometida a tanto estrés. Me dedicaba a cantar en festivales de artistas aficionados. No es una opción volver a la música ya que los maestros son demasiado exigentes y terminaría arruinándome la voz para intentar llegar a tonos que podría conseguir de manera empírica.

Buscando reducir el malestar, di inicio a la confección de pulseras de hilo, tanto chino como cola de rata. He estado haciéndolas desde el mes de junio. A veces es difícil conseguir los materiales para confeccionarlas, pero el hecho de hacerlas me aporta paz y la satisfacción de un trabajo bien hecho.

Pertenezco a varios talleres literarios, en físico y por WhatsApp, en los que comparto mis textos. Por ejemplo, el Taller Literario Espacio Abierto y el grupo Prosa. En este año obtuve mención en el Concurso de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil La Edad de Oro. Fue una gran sorpresa para mí recibir la noticia, ya que muchos decían que mis textos eran malos y nunca obtendrían premio en concursos tan importantes como La Edad de Oro. Ojalá algún día ese libro se publique para demostrar que lo único que hace falta para escribir es pasión, independientemente de la historia que se cuente.

Deseo publicar un libro del que me sienta orgullosa. Y luego de ese... que vengan muchos más.

My name is Sonia Jiménez Socarrás. I graduated in Computer Engineering and I live in Camagüey, Cuba. I belong to the AHS, an organization that brings together young people with artistic skills. Since I was little, I have been writing short stories and novels in science fiction and fantasy, which is why I decided, in coordination with the Institute of Book and Literature in my province and the literary project "Última Hoja," to create a gathering to discuss these genres. I have another gathering called Sol Naciente, in coordination with the AHS, where writers and musicians go to schools—primary, secondary, or pre-university—to introduce ourselves. Additionally, I occasionally read my texts at the Café Literario Tengo.

A friend encouraged me to explore other avenues besides writing, as I live alone and all the household responsibilities fall on me. I need to leave my job because the stress is overwhelming. I don’t like how my coworkers behave; they assign me tasks and then retract, making it seem like I’m the one who does everything wrong. They also mock me. As a result, I suffer from severe headaches due to the stress. I used to sing at amateur artist festivals, but returning to music isn’t an option since the teachers are too demanding, and I would end up ruining my voice trying to reach notes I could achieve naturally.

In an effort to reduce my discomfort, I started making thread bracelets, both Chinese and rat tail. I have been doing this since June. Sometimes it’s hard to find the materials to make them, but the act of creating them brings me peace and the satisfaction of a job well done.

I belong to several literary workshops, both in person and via WhatsApp, where I share my texts. For example, the Taller Literario Espacio Abierto and the Prosa group. This year, I received an honorable mention in the La Edad de Oro Children’s and Youth Literature Contest. It was a big surprise for me to receive the news, as many said my texts were bad and would never win awards in such important contests like La Edad de Oro. I hope one day that book gets published to prove that all it takes to write is passion, regardless of the story being told.

I wish to publish a book that I can be proud of. And after that... may many more come.
