Visiting an Underground Water Reservoir in Berlin
Light Painting in the Summer is tricky in Germany. The days are extra long, and it doesn't get dark for ages. The only way to truly enjoy Light Painting is to find a place underground. Since Iam a bit behind with content this is a good moment to get some Light Painting done.
Just yesterday I got super lucky in a spontaneous visit to the Museum of the Waterworks in Berlin. I brought my camera and just a handful of lights and thought I give it a go. Quick portrait and a Camera Rotation. Here are a few impressions and light paintrings from that afternoon.
Light Painting im Sommer ist in Deutschland so ’ne Sache. Die Tage sind ewig lang, und es wird einfach nicht richtig dunkel. Wenn man wirklich Spaß an Light Painting haben will, hilft eigentlich nur eins: ab nach drinnen oder am besten gleich unter die Erde.
Ich hatte mal wieder richtig Glück bei einem spontanen Besuch im Museum im Alten Wasserwerk in Berlin. Kamera dabei, ein paar Lichter eingepackt – und einfach mal ausprobiert. Schnell ein Porträt gemacht und dann noch eine kleine Camera Rotation hinterher.
Here you see one of the many spaces inside an underground water tank. I think there are multiple of these chambers connected at each end in a snake-like shape. If you look closely at the end on the left there is a large opening to the parallel tank to our left. Where we stand with the camera it's open to the right tank.
We just took the next best one because they all look the same.
Hier seht ihr einen der vielen Räume im unterirdischen Wassertank. Ich glaube, es gibt mehrere solcher Kammern, die schlangenförmig miteinander verbunden sind – jeweils an den Enden. Wenn man genau hinschaut, sieht man links hinten eine große Öffnung zum nächsten, parallel verlaufenden Tank auf der linken Seite. Da, wo wir mit der Kamera stehen, ist der Durchgang offen zum rechten Tank. Wir haben einfach den nächstbesten genommen – sehen eh alle gleich aus.
Aquaman (what we had to call our guide) who showed us around had to get at least one Light Painting. I asked him to just stand there and I told him I would run around with the lights for a minute or two.
Well, it was some minutes. But more on that later. Here you see the first trail. What you see is a 91-second long single exposure. With the camera at ISO 100 and the Lens at F8. Later I had to find different settings but again always a good starting point with F8.
Aquaman – so haben wir unseren Guide genannt – musste natürlich auch einmal ran. Er hat uns rumgeführt, also war klar: Er kriegt ein Light Painting. Ich hab ihm gesagt: "Stell dich einfach mal hin, ich renn dann ein bisschen mit den Lichtern rum." Na ja, aus „ein bisschen“ wurden dann ein paar Minuten. Aber dazu später mehr. Hier unser erster Versuch. Eine einzige 91-Sekunden-Einzelbelichtung. Kamera auf ISO 100, Blende F8 – klassischer Startwert für sowas. Später musste ich dann ein bisschen mit den Einstellungen experimentieren, aber F8 ist eigentlich immer ein solider Anfang.
The run was simple. Step 1. Quick light on him. Step 2 Kicklight in Orange Step 3. Light the rest of the area in blue. 170 seconds later here it is.
Der Lauf war eigentlich ganz simpel: Schritt 1 – kurz Licht auf ihn drauf, Schritt 2 – Kicklight in Orange, Schritt 3 – den Rest vom Raum in Blau ausleuchten. 170 Sekunden später – voilà, da ist das Ergebnis.
Camera Rotation might work here well
Since there was only some structure on the ceiling a camera rotation would bring some more features in other areas of the image. So let's spin this place. The procedure was the same but in the second part, I asked Aquaman to leave his spot.
So we only get the seiling to imprint in the foreground. Since I kind of already knew what I was doing, I got faster and faster running around lighting up the place. I cranked up the ISO to 800 so I saved even more time. For all this then 131 seconds seemed pretty good.
I guess I also got a good exersise from all this. Cheers!
Da an der Decke ein bisschen Struktur war, dachte ich: Kamera-Rotation bringt da nochmal richtig Dynamik rein – auch in die anderen Bildbereiche. Also: Let’s spin this place. Ablauf war wie vorher, nur mit einem kleinen Twist: Im zweiten Teil hab ich Aquaman gebeten, seinen Platz zu verlassen. So bleibt von ihm nichts im Bild, und die Decke setzt sich schön in den Vordergrund.
Da ich inzwischen ganz gut wusste, was ich tue, wurde ich beim Rumrennen mit dem Licht immer schneller. ISO hab ich hochgedreht auf 800 – spart nochmal ordentlich Zeit beim Ausleuchten. 131 Sekunden Belichtungszeit – und das fühlte sich ziemlich effizient an.

Then everything seemed to work out nicely. Not perfect but hey look at the ceiling creating this tunnel zoom effect. Same procedure as before but the ceiling was lit up at 90° and 270° again in blue. This resulted in more running but hey. 234second winn I call that! We are still in ISO 800 but I went up to F9 which worked out.
Dann lief plötzlich alles richtig rund. Nicht perfekt – aber hey, schaut euch mal die Decke an! Dieser Tunnel-Zoom-Effekt ist schon ziemlich cool geworden. Der Ablauf war wie gehabt, nur diesmal hab ich die Decke zusätzlich gezielt bei 90° und 270° mit Blau beleuchtet. Bedeutet: noch mehr Rennerei… aber was soll's. 234 Sekunden – für mich ein klarer Win!
Wir sind immer noch bei ISO 800, aber ich bin auf Blende F9 hochgegangen – hat wunderbar funktioniert.
The waterworks colors are green and blue so I gave a little trail on a branded color spin. Well .. that was not as cool. But hey I did that!
Die Farben vom Wasserwerk sind Grün und Blau – also hab ich dem Ganzen mal einen kleinen Trail im Corporate-Look verpasst. Ein bisschen Markenfarben-Spin sozusagen. War jetzt nicht der coolste Effekt ever… aber hey, ich hab’s gemacht!

Camera Rotation is what?
As I have shared with you in many of my posts about Camera Rotation. Yes, it is just what the name suggests. The camera is being rotated during the exposure, sometimes in steps sometimes in a continuous motion while doing so I also light up the scene.

Wie in einigen meiner Posts beschrieben ist Kamera Rotations Fotografie genau was der Name schon meint. Die Kamera wird einfach während der Belichtung gedreht und dabei wird das Subjekt ausgeleuchtet.

Habe auch schon an dich und Sven gedacht. Wenn es irgendwie einzufädeln ist jaaaa! Da gibts noch ein zwei sehr Lightpainting würdige Hinkucker. Eventuell ja wie bei der Rennbahn. Ich würde es cool finden.
