It is amazing that the tower is still standing and the water hasn't destroyed it yet.
I think governments all over the world still do the same thing if they feel that it is in the interest of - whoever has the poser at the time.

That's right! Well in South Tyrol it must have been cruel that time. People were Austrians, but the Land annexed from Austria by Italy 1920 after WWI and heavy fighting between Italian and Austrian troops in the Alps. So these people were not "their" people which made it easier for the fascist Italian government of that time to expropriate and resettle them. For the people it was a tragedy.
Nowadays South Tyrol, although still a part of Italy, has more rights and kind of autonomy.
