The fields blur as the train runs past them, and so the memories that are fleeting away from his mind.

Her red hair and gummy smile.

She felt like a haunting dream, and as the train stopped at the last station, he knew.

He's on the threshold of moving on.

But sometimes fate does have it's way.

To move on isn't easy but once the mind is made up it can be achieved

This has the bittersweet feeling of remembering/having to forget someone for our own good.

I'm glad you felt that way also, because I do want readers to feel how sad and happy that crossing was for him. It's letting go and entering something new...so yeah, it really ought to be bittersweet.
